We were proud to accept a highly commended award in the Driver Safety category of the Australasian Fleet Champions Awards 2022.

These annual awards are run by New Zealand road safety charity Brake, to celebrate the achievements of fleet organisations working to reduce road deaths and injuries.

Hilton Haulage’s road safety strategy has focused on driver wellness and fatigue awareness, combined with a newer, safer fleet.

Putting our company-wide motto ‘Safe Work, Safe Home’ into practice, we’ve made safety part of everything we do to ensure that our drivers and vehicles are road-fit.

Electronic logbooks and pre-start driver checks ensure our team and fleet are at optimal road fitness.

We include fatigue awareness training in our inductions and share a series of videos featuring safety tips and ways to combat fatigue with all our people.

Additionally, we have adopted technology by Guardian Seeing Machines, that help to detect fatigue in our drivers. A camera tracks driver head movement and eye closure, and if it detects fatigue or distraction, it sounds an alarm in the vehicle and alerts a 24/7 call centre which can contact Hiltons allowing us to reach out to the driver and run additional safety and fatigue checks.

As part of our continued wellness focus, we offered free medical checks, flu vaccinations, RAT tests and promote conversations around important health issues.

The combination of all these initiatives has produced impressive results. Our drivers have one of the lowest instances of speeding events recorded at 0.77 speeding events per 100km, compared to an average across the same period from the top nine companies of 7.77speeding events per 100km

Our team is proud to be recognised for our ongoing safety commitment. We are grateful to Waka Kotahi for its sponsorship of the awards and to the individual award sponsors for their vital support in the industry. These efforts go a long way in contributing to the safety of all road users in Aotearoa New Zealand.
